HySecunda - Scalable solutions for green hydrogen production in South Africa

Technology development, certification, and capacity building for the international market ramp-up of green hydrogen and its derivatives in the SADC region, using the HyShiFT project in South Africa as an example.
The accompanying research project “HySecunda” aims to develop practical and scalable solutions with significant price reduction potential for the market ramp-up of green hydrogen and its derivatives throughout the SADC region (South Africa Development Community) in conjunction with the large-scale HyShiFT project for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) based on green hydrogen in South Africa and neighboring countries. In doing so, it is promoting the urgently needed development of capacities in the field of education and training for the production of green hydrogen in South Africa and the entire SADC region.
In addition, market- and system-oriented solutions are being developed, including for the certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives to secure long-term imports to Germany and Europe. In addition, selected needs of application-oriented basic research for innovative materials and technologies will be addressed. These include developments for innovative sensors for hydrogen detection and the development of barrier and functional coatings for the longevity and cost reduction of water electrolysis components and storage systems such as tanks and pipelines.
